This record was recorded the week the first flight of asylum seekers
from Britain to Rwanda was grounded. This happened due to the
amazing and inspiring work of incredible lawyers and activists. It
marked the 10 years of the government’s ‘hostile environment’
policy, a range of measures introduced by the then home secretary,
Theresa May, to make living in the UK difficult for those without legal
status. These policies cause harm and suffering to thousands
attempting to come to the UK to find a new home whilst fleeing
violence and oppression.
Safety and protection for these people will not come via the ballot
box. We, as individuals, need to look at what we can do to organise
together to create an environment that protects those most
vulnerable.
